"I Believe in Evolution"

No need to fear, I am not changing my beliefs. A video that will be posted further down made me think of a song by the old school Christian band Geoff Moore and the Distance: "I believe in evolution: the changing of the heart, renewing of the mind." Ahh the early 90's...so campy.

The last few weeks have been tough for me. Oh sure, I appear all happy and thrilled on here, but I have been struggling. Nothing horrible. There is just a lot going on all at once and I lost my focus a bit and started struggling with some things. Easiest way to sum it up: we are all called to step out of the boat and walk on water but, like Peter, we generally all take our eyes off Him and begin to sink. We are all involved in several conflicts while we're on this Earth. The spiritual conflict we face often becomes a struggle against ourselves. Long story short: I am trying to get my focus back where it belongs. Just need to liten to the Voice of Truth who "tells me a different story. The Voice of Truth says 'Do not be afriad.'"

I have a new video on Mike Huckabee from a recent debate in New Hampshire. Being a Christian, he was naturally asked an unrelated political question. As always, Huckabee was poised and gave a fantastic answer that even made some of the other candidates raise their hand (in a praise like manner).

School is going okay. Had a test today I wasn't prepared for. The first day of class we were told that our tests would all be take home. Apparently the professor forgot these words. Luckily I B.S. well on tests. I am still digging my two computer courses. I can actually understand some HTML now. HTML is the language that all Internet is written in for those who may not know. When all is said and down I should have a web page to show for it. I was even able to read the HTML for this blog and make it not bold since my button wouldn't work. Fancy I know.

Jen was away this week so I rented "Remember Marshall". A movie about the Marshall 70's NCAA football team. Good movie that did well at presenting the history of this tradegy, but the lead actor could have been chosen better. Still worth the watch.

I had a good week NFL-wise in Week 2. The Niners are 2-0 for the first time since 1997 I believe despite a struggling offense. The Texans seem to be on the right track finally and Peyton and Company won a tough one against the team formerly known as the Oilers. There are some tough games this week so here are my picks:

Added a few more songs up above. Put in some Neil Diamond (though I couldn't find my favorite "Cherry, Cherry") and Simon and Garfunkle cause I rock like that (don't you miss our lunch car rides with my choice of music Bryan?). I will take requests if anyone has a song they want on here. The one that should play first is one of my favorites. It's "Beautiful Savior" by Casting Corwns. In fact, my aforementioned struggles are put into perspective by a verse in that song: "I will trust in the cross of my Redeemer. I will sing of The Lamb that never fails...of sins forgiven, of conscience cleared, of death defeated and life without end!" Amazing how easily we can lose faith when everything is already taken care of...beautiful Savior indeed.

I Can't Think of a Title!

I saw this in the September 2 Sunday Edition of the Boston Globe. I have noticed that most comic strips are now overtly politcal - making fun of republicans and even Christians. So you can imagine my surprise when I read "Get Fuzzy" by Darby Conley.

School is off to a fast start. I still haven't managed to get into the swing of things though. It will be a long semester, but at the same time should go by quickly. I am really looking forward to my video editing course. Besides being a cake walk, it also sounds like a lot of fun. We'll have to make a music video, newscast, put together a scene from Desperate Housewives and I can't remember the other thing. The worst part of this semester will be the late nights. Being at school till 10 and getting up at 5am is no fun. Yes, I know hwen Jacob is born I won't sleep anyway, but that and this are different. Will I be tired in both? Yes. But there is that certian mental exhuastion that comes from getting stuff done for school and work and prepering for baby and church and maintaining a marriage. All will be well though.

I have added a playlist to my blog. Not quite sure how well it will work, but hopefully it will be a nice addition. If you see one you want to hear, just select it. You can also turn it off using the controls. Songs I enjoy are on it (obviously) and I will add to it as we ride along in this journey called life. Ooooh! I should add some Journey on there too!

So the big story this week was all about those pesky New England Patriots. They were caught cheating at their season opener. I wish you guys could hear the fans out here talk about it. Apparently, since everyone cheats, its not a big deal. I stopped a guy cold in his tracks when I responded with, "so if your girlfriend cheats on you it's not a biggie because almost everyone does it?" There are a few people here who are not happy about it. My favorite agruments have been "the Patriots are a talented team, they don't need to cheat" and "Our coach is a genius, we don't need to cheat". Then why did they/he? The biggest reach are the ones (yes, plural) saying that the caoch did it on purpose in order to motivate the team because he is a genius. Riiiight. At least the NFL punished the team. I was pulling for a suspension on the coach. I never understand fining rich people. It's like going to McDonals and buying a few items for them. It will cost them draft picks too though.

It is at this point that I need to clarify something. A few posts back I stated that I "hate" the Patriots. I try and never use that word, but apparently I did and I apologize. I do not like the Pats though. I greatly respect their player talent and no doubt they are a good team that will make a run for the Super Bowl, but I am not a fan. I will even talk about them and watch a game here and there (like their big game versus the Chargers tonight). I just find some of their players and def. their coach arrogant. They are therefore far from my favorite team. Sorry that there was confusion.

Wanting to do all I can to support Mike Huckabee for President, I try to post what I can about him to help inform others. Being at work and school all day can make staying up-to-date difficult however. I found this blog that keeps close tabs on the former pastor turned govenor.

I had two things I wanted to post today, but they are such total opposites that instead of writing one giant blog, I will just do two separate, so be sure to see the one underneath this post too!

Since earlier this year, I have talked about former Governor Mike Huckabee. He started off as one of the lesser known candidates, but has quickly gained steam and support. Though I didn't see it last night (I don't have FOX News), I saw this clip on the local morning news and thought he stood his ground and answered a question regarding Iraq well against Congressman Paul...who seems to be at the wrong debate. The first clip is of that exchange, and the second is a quick post debate interview.

Are You Ready for Some Football?

Ahhh, one of my favorite times of the year! The NFL season will officially be underway tonight as the Colts take on the Saints. The following ad was in the most recent issue of Sports Illustrated and I wanted to share it.

I thought I would share my picks for the week. Not sure why, just felt like it. Will I be wrong? Possibly, but that is why I don't do it for a living. Actually a number of years back, Jennifer and I started picking for fun. It was actually a great way for her to become interested in the game and learn about it so husbands take note. It then spilled over to the law firm I worked at. It morphed from a simple "pick the winner" game to a battle of supremacy. Bonus choices were made for preseason which led to predictions for divisional winners the following year. For anyone who must know (because I am secure enough to say it), Jenn has a slight edge over me, winning the last few (all) years. Last year I lost by one game though so I feel pretty confident.

AP: NOTTINGHAM, Md. — Elwood "Bunky" Bartlett says a New Age book store made it possible for him to become an overnight multimillionaire.

He and his wife, Denise, were on their way to the shop where he occasionally teaches Wicca and Reiki (RAY'kee) healing when they stopped at a liquor store and bought two $5 Mega Millions tickets for Friday night's estimated $330 million jackpot. On Sunday, he said one ticket was a winner.

"If it wasn't for this place I wouldn't have won the lottery," Bartlett said Sunday at Mystickal Voyage, the New Age shop.

"There's no reason to believe it's not legitimate, but it has to go through security," said Maryland State Lottery Director Buddy Roogow, who said he has spoken with Bartlett.

Bartlett, an accountant from Dundalk, said he made a bargain with the multiple gods associated with his Wiccan beliefs: "You let me win the lottery and I'll teach." Both tickets he purchased had numbers chosen randomly from the computer.

Bartlett had not decided if he will accept his winnings as an annuity or choose the lump sum cash option. The jackpot could get larger once ticket sales are tallied, Roogow said, but the lump sum payment would be at least $48.7 million, or about $32 million after taxes.

According to preliminary calculations, each ticket would be worth about $82 million if the prize were taken in 26 annual payments.

Bartlett said the money won't change him, although he plans to invest in Mystickal Voyage. "I'm going to live my life like I have been," he said.

I am sure the "multiple gods" (or demons) are thrilled. What is truly sad is that because of this, he will continue in his beliefs because he will think they are validated. Praying to demons can have results. Just keep this difference in mind. What God does for a person is the best possible thing (good or bad). He has a set plan for each of us that is to help us. Demons and Satan have one goal in mind, get your focus off the true God. They may promise you things, but he is the Father of Lies and could care less about your best interest. Not trying to be preachy, just felt like I needed to say it.

The Mom We All Wished For

ONTARIO, Calif. — An 8-month-old boy has died after his mother told police she accidentally cleaned his nose with a cotton swab used earlier to clean a methamphetamine pipe.

Samuel Reta of Ontario was declared dead Friday at Loma Linda University Medical Center, according to the San Bernardino County Coroner's office.

Reta had been in a coma since police responding to a child-not-breathing emergency call early Thursday found him in full cardiac arrest. The baby also has a fractured skull, broken arm and pneumonia, police said.

Elizabeth Reta, 27, was arrested Thursday and booked for investigation of felony child abuse.

Her boyfriend Juan Antonio Sanchez Jr., who surrendered to police later that night, was also arrested on suspicion of abusing the child, officials said.

It was not immediately known if Reta and Sanchez faced additional charges now that they boy had died, police Sgt. Joseph Giallo said Monday.

Reta had told police she gave the baby a bath, and then used the cotton swab to clean his nose because it was itching, police said. She said she didn't know the swab had been used to clean a methamphetamine pipe.

It wasn't clear when the baby suffered the broken bones. Police said some of the injuries may be the result of Sanchez's attempt to rouse the baby from his seizure.

Colorado Student Files Lawsuit Over Commencement Speech That Mentioned Jesus

AP DENVER — A student who said she was told she wouldn't get her diploma unless she apologized for a commencement speech in which she mentioned Jesus has filed a lawsuit alleging her free speech rights were violated.

The school district contends its actions were "constitutionally appropriate."

Erica Corder was one of 15 valedictorians at Lewis-Palmer High School in 2006. All were invited to speak for 30 seconds at the graduation ceremony. When it was Corder's turn, she encouraged the audience to get to know Jesus Christ.

Corder had not included those remarks during rehearsals.

Corder's lawsuit, filed Monday in U.S. District Court, said Principal Mark Brewer told her to prepare a public apology or she would not receive her diploma. She was still allowed to graduate.

The lawsuit said Brewer would not give Corder her diploma until she included a sentence saying, "I realize that, had I asked ahead of time, I would not have been allowed to say what I did." Corder received her diploma after complying.

The school district released a statement Wednesday saying officials reviewed Corder's case when it happened in 2006 and also met several times with Corder and her parents.

"While we are disappointed that this matter has resulted in litigation, we are confident that all actions taken by school officials were constitutionally appropriate," the statement said. "As a result, we intend to vigorously defend the claims. Beyond that, it is the district's policy not to comment on pending litigation."

Brewer, who now works for Douglas County schools, declined to comment Wednesday.

Corder is represented by attorneys affiliated with Liberty Counsel, an Orlando, Fla.-based group that says it is dedicated to advancing religious freedom.

Love that Triple-Pane Action!

We finally have our new windows installed! That should be it on major 'repairs' to our new home for a while. I felt bad for the guy doing them. We had nine windows replaced and he was all by himself doing the job. His help had called in sick. He got here around nine on Friday and left after six. He was able to take out all the windows and put the new ones in.

He came back Saturday at eight and worked till about 5:30 installing the trim inside and out as well as caulking and all that stuff. Not bad work really for one person. I was quite impressed with Newpro. They cleaned up everything nicely, cut some wood for me to use on a different project, scrubbed the windows down before leaving...all that good stuff. It is nice to be able to lock the windows now as well as not have every bug of the night sky come in to mate with our lights. It's also nice in the bathroom - we don't have ventilation in there so it can be rather hot after a shower and of course the other more obvious problem. The window in there before wouldn't stay open. I can tell a huge difference in the whole house as far as temperature goes. All that to say it was money well spent...or borrowed, whatever.

The only real snag was having to take our A/C out. I took it out Thursday night which wasn't a problem. We hadn't used it for almost a week because it had been in the 60's. Friday was 80's...warm but bearable. Saturday however was in the upper 90's. It was nasty hot in here (and nothing like a 30 degree temperature jump to make you sick FYI). So by the time the guy left, Jennifer was more than ready for me to put the A/C back in. One look told me we had a problem I didn't want to say out loud. Yep - wouldn't fit in the window anymore. Yes it is the same size window, but I think the sill or some other part raises up high...whatever the problem, the unit was now too tall to fit in the window.

Now Jennifer and I never really have fights. If we do they last maybe 5 minutes before one of us laughs. This basically sent *everyone* off the deep end. Let's just say it was my fault that I didn't predict the future and I do take full responsibility for that. We went to our corners for a while and I went to work on a solution. I ended up putting the A/C at the dining room window. Not the ideal location, but it does work. Actually it was a better fit there, easier to install and is less of an eye sore for the living room as well as curb appeal. Once the cool air was flowing again and the furniture was put back in place, *everyone* was happy again.

All in all a loooong weekend, but things look nice now!

I love the comic strip "Zits". I started reading it at Adams & Coker and then asked Santa for the book collections after we moved here. Anyway, I came across one I wanted to share. This is also the last week of summer camp at work. Things will go back to normal finally next week. My final semester begins September 5! I ordered my books on Amazon and all too late realized I didn't change my default shipping address :(

Sorry Tyler, TX

Just read a very shocking article reporting that the brilliantly created reality FOX show Anchor Woman would be canceled after only one airing. I know, I know - it's very upsetting and most of us won't be able to sleep at night. I mean seriously, what are these people thinking? A woman who has no acting much less anchoring (that a word?) experience gets a job at a struggling news station in Tyler, TX. Maybe the woman had nothing to lose, but I have to figure that it would harm the station more than help it. I would find it hard to take them seriously afterwards.

It all works out though. I think Tyler is better off with out this show. No offense (because they do this in every town) but the people they spoke with off the street weren't exactly the brightest in the box. I know Tyler is not a hick town, but FOX was advertising it like it was. Saves me a lot of heat at work and school too. Didn't want to get into any fights defending family and friends (though I would have if need be).

Speaking of getting into fights - I had an alteration at work this week with a very tall man. This guy, who will go unnamed, works at the same place I do with the older children (I am with kindergarten). We have two buses at work: one has a CD player/radio the other does not. Whoever the site coordinator is that day tells everyone which bus to get on. This particular day we got the "fun" bus. I use quotes because quite honestly I'd rather the none radio bus. I generally have to find a happy place when the radio is involved. Scary some of the songs these young children know and even scarier the dance moves they do, but that is a different post.

Anywho, as we were loading up to leave and head back from our trip, this co-worker began yelling at me for getting on the bus with the radio. Literally yelling and in front of all the students (which is a pet peeve of mine). He kept saying all this stuff about us not being fair and that our kids always get the bus (which we hadn't in over a week). I calmly told him that the boss man told us to get on this bus and he should talk to him. This really set him off. He began saying that this wasn't about the boss and it was about me and him and the fact that I am not fair. Now in print, this seems like a fairly simple conversation, but it was anything but. This guy was not going to listen to reason, he wanted his way or nothing and was basically trying intimidate me. I don't get angry very easily, but I was set off this day. Probably because I was being accused for no reason and he wouldn't listen. I finally walked away and then he began yelling at other teachers about me.

As I said this guy is tall. He is a professional basketball player (though not pro) and has played for the Harlem Globetrotters. I think I reach his mid chest region. No teaching experience, but his agent (seriously) got him the job here. He never follows the rules the rest of the teachers have to and he also finds screaming in the face of children and threatening them with jail time a good teaching method (he makes most of the kids cry which gets them yelled at more). I figured if it came down to throws, I'd make a punch for the crotch which is near my shoulder and then run. Remember kids, you don't have to run the fastest...you just can't be the slowest.

We're getting our windows replaced today so I am hanging in the basement. Pray that the guy finishes today. He said it may take till tomorrow (his help is sick) but I would love for Jennifer's sake for it to be finished today. The noise is quite amplified down here. I may take some Ambien to make it through the bulk of the day. Joking. Or am I?

Romney Wins, as Huckabee Takes Second in Iowa Poll (Update1)

Aug. 11 (Bloomberg) -- Mitt Romney, the former governor of Massachusetts, won the Iowa straw poll, securing his status as the leading Republican in a state that has dashed the ambitions of many would-be presidents.

``This important victory sends a signal to grassroots Republican activists across the country that we are working hard to earn their support,'' said Romney, who received 4,516 of the 14,302 ballots cast, for 31 percent.

He was followed by former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee, who secured a surprising 2,587 votes, at 18 percent. Senator Sam Brownback of Kansas came in third place, with 2,197 votes at 15 percent.

With former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani and Arizona Senator John McCain skipping the event, and Romney the presumed winner, the race was largely about who would come in second.

``For all practical purposes, we won the Iowa straw poll,'' Huckabee said. ``No one gets more mileage for their money,'' he said, referring to his shoestring campaign.

Brownback, Huckabee's main competitor for second place, had a more organized Ames operation, complete an air-conditioned tent for his supporters. By contrast, Huckabee's effort was a ragtag affair in the sweltering heat. His campaign could only afford to purchase 1,800 tickets, far fewer than he needed to come in second.

Early Indication
In fourth place was Representative Tom Tancredo of Colorado at 13 percent, followed by Representative Ron Paul of Texas at 9 percent and former Wisconsin Governor Tommy Thompson at 7 percent. Representative Duncan Hunter of California, Giuliani, McCain and Fred Thompson all received a little over 1 percent.

Part political rally, part summer festival, part fund- raiser, the event on the campus of Iowa State University won't award any of the delegates that will determine the 2008 Republican presidential nominee. Nonetheless, it gives an early indication of Iowa Republican sentiment before the state caucuses traditionally held in January, mainly by determining who leaves the stage.

All week, analysts and campaign advisers have predicted that the event in Ames, Iowa, would winnow the crowded field of nine candidates. Days after the 1999 contest, Republican Senators Elizabeth Dole and Lamar Alexander and former Vice President Dan Quayle all ended their quests.

Romney had a distinct advantage in cash and organization, having raised the most money among all the Republican presidential candidates this year. The money helped Romney blanket Iowa with advertising. It also bought plenty of the $35 tickets needed for each supporter to vote and pay for buses to get them to Ames.

A strong showing in Ames doesn't guarantee success in the delegate-selection caucus, traditionally the first contest in the presidential nomination race. In 1996, then-Senator Phil Gramm of Texas tied fellow Senator Bob Dole of Kansas in the straw poll, only to finish fifth at the caucus in January. Dole went on to win the Republican nomination.

In 1979, George H.W. Bush, the president's father, won the straw poll, only to lose the nomination to Ronald Reagan, who went on to win the presidency.

Brief Update

Just a quick update since I see that people are checking in often.

We returned from our vacation in Maine with Jennifer's parent's last week. It was good time and I have plenty of pictures that I will share later this week. I am still going through them and organizing. I threw in one to tide you all over.

We closed on our new home a week ago. We are working hard getting it cleaned up before we officially move in. I have been busy painting the basement all weekend. Next up is the bedroom, then possibly the baby's room. House warming gifts are welcome ;)

Speaking of the baby, we found out Friday that we are having a boy! Very exciting! Now we can finally register and all that fun stuff!

Finally, I wanted to post the new website for Mike Huckabee. I spoke of him a while back. He is the former Governor of Arkansas and a real stand up, Christian man who is truly humble and an overall good guy. He is the one I always bring up and people will respond with, "who?" He is quite possibly the best candidate out there for President of the United States. One of the best things he says regards pro-life. He believes that pro-life isn't just about protecting the baby in the womb. He wants us to be pro-life through out the child's life...in education, health and so on. Good point. The Dark Knight

Seeing as how I had nothing better to do today after being released from the ER at 2am Sunday morning, I spent some of today surfing the web. I checked into the sequel to Batman Begins and was able to find a picture of the movie's villian The Joker (played by Heath Ledger). While Jack Nicholson is a great actor, I wasn't crazy about his take on The Joker. Hopefully Heath will play the guy with a more truely insane, murdering, physcopath take. The picture does make him look pretty spooky. The Dark Knight opens July 18, 2008.

Coming this December

Now that the word is officially and fully out, I can finally post a picture to all my loyal readers. Of course it is kind of a mute (or is it moot) point since my loyal readers involve two people that already know this news. Oh well.

A (long) Bit of Everything

So this will be pretty random stuff. More of a collection of things I noticed or have found interesting lately. First off is the Presidential Election this November. Of course it really isn't till next year, but it sure seems like it should be this year doesn't it? All the coverage, debates and I have even seen campaign commercials. Insane. It does beg the question, who will you vote for? I am pretty much conservative. I say "pretty much" simply because there are some things I may disagree with, but overall I agree. The problem is that most of the Republican candidates are against some of the more traditional conservative values, the most prominent in my mind being the family, pro-life, and stem cell research.

If I had to vote today, the only candidate I really dig is Mike Huckabee. This seems like a good guy with good values and ideas. I listened to a lengthy interview with him the other day on 1150 AM WTTT and liked everything he had to say. The problem here is that some where along the way the Presidential campaign has turned into a popularity contest of sorts, so names like Giuliani, McCain, Clinton and Obama have more clout than people who actually have plans and beliefs. We live in a fickle society that will vote blindly. People will vote for a person they know nothing about. One needs look no further than the November elections for proof. People went all Democrat because they didn't like the war, but they knew nothing about the person or what else they would do in power. All that too say a good guy like Huckabee won't make it far because no one knows him. Sad since he may be the best to offer right now.

This leads me to a second thought. I love listening to Sean Hannity on the above mentioned station on my way home from work. Today he brought up a great point. Going off of the President's speech today regarding Iran, he discussed the face that this summer will be vital for Iraq. He then went on to read an article written by a "liberal media" reporter that actually states that things are improving in Iraq (in one of the more violent provinces). The tribes there apparently became fed up with the violence and began working together with Iraqi and American forces and the tide has begun to turn there. This brought up the question what will the media and the Democrats do if America and Iraq begin winning this war? Very interesting to think about.

This goes into my next tidbit (I love flowing). I am reading an excellent book by Joel Rosenberg titled "The Copper Scroll". I actually blogged another book by this guy last June (Ezekiel Option). To quote myself, "the author has a knack for writing fiction which turns to truth. In his first hit novel, "The Last Jihad", he wrote of a hijacked jet on a kamikaze mission into an American city. No biggie right? Except that he wrote it nine months before 9/11. In the same book, an American President finds himself at war with Saddam Hussein over terrorism and WMD's. The book was published 5 months before the war in Iraq.His second novel, "The Last Days", opens with the death of Yasser Arafat...Thirteen months before the man's actual death." An excerpt from the same book wrote about terrorist coming into the U.S. through Canada. Again he wrote this before it occurred last year. In "Ezekiel Option" Iran vows to destroy Israel and teams ups with Russia. The day to book came out Iran elected a new president who vowed to accelerate their nuclear program and later he promised to "wipe Israel off the earth." 2 months after that Russia agreed to sell Iran 1 billion worth of "fighter jets, missiles and naval warships." Again I say insane. Man is an out standing Christian author. His fiction is so intriguing, but real enough that it could (and has) actually happen.

One part of the book that really made me think was mention of the Antichrist. On page 156 a character says, "Since nobody knows when Jesus is going to return-Jesus said even He didn't know; He said only His Father knew- that would mean that Satan doesn't know either. Which means Satan has always had to be prepared for any eventuality. That means that for almost two thousand years, he's had to have at least one Antichrist on the earth, in position, ready to go, in every generation since the Resurrection. Which is why there have been so many evil dictators throughout history. So there has to be someone out there, right now, walking around the planet at this very minute. Waiting. Preparing. Plotting. It could be somebody you know." I have never thought of it that way, but it makes sense.

Finally, I funny quote from this week's Sports Illustrated. Shaquille O'Neal sad of someone (coach, player, owner?), "Sam is an idiot. I-D-O-U-T, idiot." At least he can make free throws. Oh wait, he can't. Spurs rule.

Update

I realize I haven't updated this site in quite sometime. I promise I will do that soon. School is officially out for the summer and I am just trying to settle into a new schedule. Sooo I will update this blog soon enough. Though technically, this in itself would be an update so consider yourself updated. My job here is done.

I caught the Red Fever

Today, we went to our very first Red Sox game. I have never been a huge baseball fan. I cheered for the Houston Astros and would keep track of their wins when they made the playoffs. Watched maybe one or two games when they were in the World Series a few years back (though I was moving half way across the Nation then). I have been to games at the Astro Dome, the Texas Rangers Ballpark in Arlington, and Coors Field (Colorado Rockies).

However, this year I have become very excited about the Red Sox. Maybe it is because we are surrounded by Red Sox news and a lot of hype. Maybe it is because cheering for the Red Sox is really exciting. Either way, I have been keeping up with them through spring training and their season. I even bunkered down in a classroom that wasn't being used at college and got the game to project on the board just to watch Dice-K pitch.

When my sister and brother-in-law came out this past August, we went by Fenway which was cool in itself. Going to an actual game was an amazing experience (right up there with getting to go see Les Miserables). The crowd, the fans, the drunk slurs, people saying a player "sucks" and then cheering for him in a 30 second span, and the game itself...it was all a blast. One other reason it may have been so fun was the view. Everyone has said that there are no bad seats at Fenway. I'd have to agree with that. Our seats were in right field, maybe 10 rows away from the field, but even the "nose bleeds" are not that far up. Normally, I am so far away from the action, I couldn't tell if someone was up to bat, much less who it was. It was a little chilly, but it wasn't too big of a deal. I found it kind of funny since the last time I went to a game with my best friend Bryan was wicked hot. One day I will go to a temperature friendly game.

Curt Schilling had a great game. He has come back pretty well after falling flat in the season opener. He pitched all but one inning. David Ortiz totaled 4 R.B.I.'s after hitting a homer in the 8th that put the game out of reach. Soxs beat Anheim 8 to 0. No angels in the outfield today.

Heaven's Champion

There are so many things I could write for Easter. It is my favorite day of the year and I take joy in thinking of what it means. It is more than 'just another day', but a time in which I am able to deeply reflect on the salvation that was given to me (and anyone else who wishes to accept it through belief in Christ...see previous post) through Jesus' death and resurrection.

I have been reading a book titled "Heaven" by Randy Alcorn. You can guess the main topic I imagine, but he has opened my eyes to the amazing depth of the Resurrection. His victory over death not only broke the hold that the curse of sin has on mankind, but also on all of creation. At the Resurrection, the entire universe will be renewed. Christ's sacrifice is beyond mind blowing.

My words can not at this time accurately express my gratitude and joy in the gift of grace. There are numerous songs though that cause my spirit to swell with excitement. This is Easter, I thought I would share them with you.

Good Friday

This week at the school I work at, I made metnion of the fact that they were closed on Good Friday. A man overheard me and stated, "Ah a day off. Thank God for the Catholics."

Another woman who is a teacher stated that she wasn't off since the school doesn't celebrate Jewish holidays, it can't celebrate "Catholic holidays".

If I hadn't already insulted the first man awhile back by stating I moved here to help with a church (and if I thought about it at that moment instead of two hours later) I would have told him to simply thank God for Good Friday. It was God who sent His son Jesus down to die for our sins and offer us all redemption and forgiveness of our sins (see previous post for more information there).

So today, be sure to take a moment and reflect on what it all means. It's not about a day off by any means (cause I am working too!). It's about your soul.

Hopefully i will have some time to write one more post for my favorite "holiday" of the year.

Belief in God

In a Newsweek article by Brian Braiker, it is stated that, "A belief in God and an identification with an organized religion are widespread throughout the country...Nine in 10 (91 percent) of American adults say they believe in God and almost as many (87 percent) say they identify with a specific religion."

There are many different ways I could go with this blog. I could talk about the other strange numbers that don't jive with the above percentage. For instance "Nearly half (48 percent) of the public rejects the scientific theory of evolution; one-third (34 percent) of college graduates say they accept the Biblical account of creation as fact. Seventy-three percent of Evangelical Protestants say they believe that God created humans in their present form within the last 10,000 years; 39 percent of non-Evangelical Protestants and 41 percent of Catholics agree with that view. "

91 % of Americans believe in God, but only 48 % in creation by God? Ummm...okay.

I could talk about the comments made of this 'Godly' public being cool with atheist. Or I could go political and comment on the numbers regarding the influence of religion in politics and how electing a guy cool with abortion is insync with Christian values.

Instead I will go a different direction. In celebration of Resurrection Sunday (Easter) next week, I want to focus on that 91% of the population.

It is an unfortunate event when people read these numbers and comment on how great it is that so many believe in God. They will often say it is proof that everything is okay and that these hardy, gung-ho Christians are crazy for thinking that the U.S./the world is going to pot. I would love to ask some of these people who they think God is. Believing in God and worshiping/following God are two entirely different things. I believe that George Washington was real, but I don't worship the guy. I really don't know that much about him either. Sure, I know some of the main points but nothing detailed. Out of that 91%, who could tell me how to get to Heaven (hint:being a good person has nothing to do with it)? One of my favorite things to say about these numbers is that even Satan and his demons believe in God...and the Bible says they tremble at the thought of Him.

I live in an area where there is a very skewed view of God. Yeah, people believe in him. These same people also visit mediums and trust what they have to say. They party all week and then show up on Sunday to sit and stare. They go through rituals (in Catholic churches),but can't tell you why they do it or what it means. They don't understand what I mean when I talk about ministry or serving God. They are dumbfounded that I won't do something because it goes against my beliefs often thinking I am following some forced rule of the church instead of my heart.

Out of that 91%, how many of them will be in Heaven? Of course only God himself knows their hearts and it is not my place to assume. I can however share how one can be there.

We live in a fallen world. It was created in perfection but fell under the curse of sin (the bad stuff as I call it) under Adam and Eve's watch. God is a sinless and holy God. He rejects sin and can in no way allow it into His presence. The punishment he places on sin is death. Physical death. Death leads to Hell, total separation from God in never ending, burning torment. This curse passes down to everyone through the man's seed.

Humans cannot obtain holiness on their own. As I stated, being the best you can be or trying to do good won't get you anything. I know a lot of nice people who don't believe in God. After Adam and Eve sinned, God promised them that one day He would restore all things and would send One who would save us. Until that time, the people were required to sacrifice animals in order to receive forgiveness of sins (hold on to this info). The Israelites would sin and sacrifice. The problem is that they would always go back to their sinful lifestyles (much like we do today).

This brings us to Jesus, God's son. He is the one God promised to Adam and Even. He was born of the virgin Mary. Why is that important? Because Jesus was born without sin since he was born by the seed of a woman, not man. Jesus lived his entire life without sinning. Then he was arrested and killed. He didn't have to die. He had the authority and power to leave. It was a choice. Before I stated that the punishment for sin is death. Jesus took our punishment. He was our sacrifice. He died and went to Hell for us. He took all our sins and made them his own. And in his power, He rose from the dead three days later. Through belief in Him, we are promised eternal life.

If we truly believe in God and that Jesus lived, died and rose again, then we can ask God to forgive us of our sins. The price has been paid for them by His son. He will immediately give you forgiveness. You don't have to ask a priest or light any candles. You just simply talk to God right where you are and tell Him you have sinned, want to be forgiven and that you want to follow Him. All have sinned too. No one except Christ is perfect. Ever steal something? You are a robber. Ever told a tiny white lie? You are a liar. Ever looked at another and lusted? Then you are an adulterer. It doesn't matter how big or small, all have sinned.

Forgiveness is yours though if you believe. God has given us all a choice. We can either believe in God and do nothing about it or we can trust in and follow God and be forgiven of our sins. Don't be fooled by the numbers. There is a huge difference in believing in and truly following God. Thinking He exist, going to church, and/or being good won't get you to Heaven. Only accepting the gift He gave you (for free) through His son Jesus will. This Easter, I hope you will consider this.

Brady Fumbles

So I haven't posted and what news report do I decide to comment on? None other than pretty-boy QB Tom Brady (New England Patriots).

It is being reported that Tom Brady is going to be a dad...to two different women. A few months ago, it was confirmed that Brady's ex-girlfriend was preggers with his child. Apparently, most people thought this was great. Because all children born out of wedlock to ex-lovers is the way we are supposed to do it. Besides, Tom is a great and stand up guy who is probably sent from Heaven to save mankind (at least that is the impression I generally get from reports I read...though I live in the lion's den when it comes to the Patriots). Everyone ooo'ed and ahhh'ed at this fantastic news. Again, isn't it everyone's dream to have a child with someone they have ALREADY BROKEN UP WITH? Apparently, yes.

The real kick comes with reports today that Tom Brady is also expecting a child with his new lova'. Is anyone outraged? Nope. Most seem to be having fun coming up with creative sentences and headlines (like mine, or more uplifting ones like "It seems there's no defense that can stop Tom Brady — on or off the field."...seriously? Thought he lost the last two years in the playoffs) instead of asking, "are these two married?" and "what about the chick who is carrying his other kid"?

But it doesn't matter because we are currently a world that accepts such behavior as this and turns our noses up at 'close minded' people with morals and Godly beliefs.
It is sad. The role models for our children are pathetic. Little girls adore Britney Spears and Lindsey Lohan, both of whom have rehabphobia...but that is okay, getting drunk all the time and the like is wicked cool! Boys (and girls) love Tom Brady. He is the epitome of perfection. Great athelete, nice, yadda. And he gets women pregnant that he isn't even married too! Reach for the stars children!

We can't control how these adults act. I may come across as judgmental above, but I do no wish to be. I am not perfect. I once heard a preacher say that you can't expect better when they are not saved...they don't know any better. And a lot of parents don't know any better to tell their children that this is nice behavior. That they should't act that way or dress that way. The sadder part is this. A lot of Christian parents won't say anything about it either. They do know better.

Oh, and Tommy boy...take a cue from the field and get some better protection.

Coach Tony Dungy

I know Coach Lovie Smith is also a Christian and this is not a knock on him. I have always liked Coach Dungy because he is a good Christian man. I was thrilled last night when he and his Colts won the Super Bowl. He is more than a good man. He is an amazing Godly man who all men should try to be like. After he won last night, a reporter asked how it felt to be the first African American coach to win. He humbly said he was happy to represent that community but added that he was more proud to be a Christian who showed it was possible to coach, lead a team and win the big game "God's way". Wow. The following video was from Super Bowl Breakfast last year. Keep in mind that this was after losing in the playoffs again and (more importantly) less than 2 months after his son committed suicide. Watch and then ask yourself how easy it would be for you to get up in front of a large audience at a sporting even and say these words.



Congrats Coach Dungy. You deserve it.

Did Boston Overreacct?

On Wednesday, Turner Broadcasting tried to do some 'advertising' for the Cartoon Network's "Adult Swim". This advertising included placing make shift light brights in 10 U.S. cities with a crude and angry looking character shooting the bird. These creations featured a battery pack, electrical tape, and wires (in some instances protruding). An employee at one of the MTBA (mass transit) stations where a sign was posted first reported it to authorities. Out of those 10 cities, Boston was the only to take the matter as a possible threat. Boston's finest came out in force along with the bomb squad and quickly investigated the matter. People watched and waited for any report on the matter. When it was announced as a publicity stunt by Turner Network, people were relieved. Now a day later and after the fact, people are asking 'did Boston overreact?'

In my opinion, no. Hindsight is always a wonderful thing. It is easy for other cities to and even MA residents to question it now, but no one was embarrassed as the city looked into these glowing signs placed around the city in crowded and well traveled locations. Younger Bostonians says the city's reaction caused mass hysteria and was uncalled for. Even young adults found it to be silly to investigate. Keep in mind that it was from Boston that the hijacked planes of 9/11 took flight. In fact, one of the first devices was placed just over a mile away from the airport.

What makes a person feel safe? When is it okay to investigate a suspicious package or activity? This is supposed to be our patriotic duty. The amazing part is that if nothing was done and this did in fact turn out to be some type of terrorist attack, then people would be saying 'why didn't Boston do anything?' I believe this advertising attempt involved some poor planning and was not carried out well by Turner Broadcasting (lets not forget they used some block character flipping us all off to advertise....but that sort of thing doesn't seem to phase people as it should). In this day and age, people should know better. Make a few phone calls, get the required permission and then advertise. And to all those worried that their city is now a "laughing stock", get over yourself and be glad you live in a town that learned from past mistakes and jumped on a potential problem efficiently and effectively. I for one take comfort in that and applaud a job well done.

So what is the great thing about school starting up again and me being busy? You get me doing a half cheeked job on my blog. You benefit really. I mean, who truely wants to read about what Christmas card won my twisted little game? Or who wants to read my opinions on the year that was? Not too many according to the ol' stat counter.

So, for the next few weeks, I will begin posting movie previews for the most anticipated movies of 2007. We start off with...well I don't really need to say because its the title of the blog. Perhaps I should change it in order to build suspense for this very moment. But doing so would take a lot of time. Time I just don't have to waste. Funny how time is like that eh? I mean, you have it and use it, but then when you need it it isn't there to be had. Sure, I could change it but think of the effort involved. Those 10 seconds are important and could be spent elsewhere. Alas, I shall leave it as it is. Boy, think of all the time I just saved.

So 2006 has come and gone and its time for my Second Annual Year in Review. Now these are simply my opinions. When it comes to categories such as movies, I review or rate only what I have seen. If you happen to disagree with my picks, that's fine. Just don't freak out on me. It's all in good fun. Being that the same people visit this blog, I am not too concerned about it.

Best Movies
1. Superman Returns - Don't be fooled by the less than expected numbers this movie pulled in over the summer. It was reviewed better than Pirates 2 which ran away with the box office. This movie is visually stunning, has a great story, and is the perfect spring board for this once powerful franchise. If you didn't see it, do yourself a favor and rent it.

2. The Departed - This star filled film by legend Scorsese made me want to be a cop and a mob boss all at once. Or I could just be a dirty cop and get the best of both worlds. Great film.

3. Invincible - A great sports movie that does have some of your typical sports film moments, but the true story in itself will keep your attention throughout.

4. Mission Impossible 3 & Cars - In what will probably be Cruises' last MI film (since being fired from the studio), this film had it all. I had never seen any of the other MI films but was immediately engrossed in the story and special effects. Pixar pulls off another winner in the cute comedy featuring the voice of Owen Wilson.

Worst Films
1. The Wickerman - Don't you love when previews look so great and present such a fascinating story? Such wicked lies. This was one of Cage's worst films...something he seems to do a lot of lately. Perhaps it is a good thing he will be taking a break for awhile. This film fell flat at every single level and in the end I didn't know whether to laugh ("Oh my legs! You have broken my legs") or cry that I paid the price of admission.

2. Silent Hill - Never again will I look forward to a movie inspired by a video game. If ever a movie had the potential for thrills and plot twist, the game Silent Hill would surely provide it. However this film simply stunk and blew a great opportunity.

3. Date Movie & Scary Movie 4 - there comes a time in every franchises life when it is time to end it. Please stop and let us be.

1. Seeing the up and coming potential of the young 49ers offense. QB Alex Smith, TE Vernon Davis and RB Frank Gore are growing under the supervision of Dallas mastermind Norv Turner. They should be fun to watch next season.

2. The glory of the NFC division. Only here can a team with a losing record still have a shot at making the playoffs. Really gives a person hope.

3. Texas A&M finally beating the Longhorns.

4. The play of the Tennessee Titans under Vince Young. I was the guy who said he was overrated going so high in the draft. But hey, I am human. The kid is really good (looks like everything Michael Vick was supposed to be) and should have the Titans in the thick of the playoff race next year.

5. The following article. Maybe its because I read it when I was tired, maybe it is because of the cold meds, or maybe its because I work with kids all day. Or it could just be that it was really poorly worded. Sports writer Mike Tanier explains how QB Alex Smith is doing better at holding on to the football thanks to a new rule that "allows each team to bring a dozen balls with them to away games for use on offense. The balls must be examined by a referee, but they can be doctored to some extent to remove the slick waterproofing from their surface."

Tanier goes on to say, "Smith isn't the only one who is happy after a thorough ball-buffing. Frank Gore had some fumbling problems early in the year. But Gore doesn't seem to have any trouble holding onto Smith's balls. The Broncos, who come from the capital of ball-doctoring, may want to keep Jay Cutler's balls in a humidor so the rookie's passes don't sail on him. But the Broncos backs and receivers may have trouble grasping soggy balls."

Yeah, its been a few hours since I read it and it is still funny.

1. Heros (Monday on NBC) - the surprise show that has taken the country by storm. "Save the Cheerleader. Save the world." With plot twists and new questions in every episode, Heros has built more than a cult following, it has even been nominated for two Golden Globes (best drama and best actor). If you haven't seen this great drama, catch the marathon on January 1. Trust me, after 1 or 2 episodes and you'll be hooked.

1. Smalliville (Thursday on CW) - The sixth season has seen many changes for Clark Kent. As he begins to develop a greater sense of need in the world around him, we are treated to the new addition of Green Arrow. Coming up: the first look at the Justice League. This show has done an amazing job at staying fresh after this many seasons.

3. House (Tuesday on FOX) - Dr. House faces more than medical challenges these days in what has been a great season on FOX. House's drug addiction has finally caught up to him after a cop began investigating him (after being jilted in the waiting room). Can't wait to see how this story plays out.

4. The Office (Thursday on NBC) - This comedy reaches new heights this season as several new faces began work at Dunder Mifflin. Steve Carell is at his best. The best comedy on television.

5. Bones (Wednesday on FOX) - The sophomore season of this show has been no disappointment. As tension continues to rise between Booth and Bones, the mysterious continue to get better and better as well as the deepening story lines between Bones family history and some of the uncaught killers.

Not Looking Forward To...
1. Grease: You're the One that I Want (NBC) - for the love of everything, why ruin a great movie with this reality show?

2. Summer - Is it just me, or does it keep getting hotter and hotter?

3. The inauguration of MA Governor Deval Patrick. I wonder how the people who elected him will react once he raises our already high taxes and gives free passes to illegal immigrants.

Looking Forward To...
1. Beauty and the Geek (CW) - One of the better reality shows out there that is funny, sweet and actually seems to teach some life lessons to the contestants.

2. Summer - Is it just me, or is there a TON of stuff to do in New England?

3. December. I will finally be finished with college!..until I begin work on my Masters that is.

Merry Christmas!

As is tradition, tonight my wife and I selected the Card of the Year.
This is the first year that the chosen card has been featured on my blog. I find this to be a welcome addition to the contest after nearly 10 years.

Allow me to provide a brief history. One Christmas Eve, my sister and I were hamming it up for the camera. My sister is all her creativity, pulled out all the Christmas cards and we pretended to host an awards show of sorts. We selected what we thought was the best card of the bunch, had a laugh, and then ate junk food. Little did we know that this would be such a big hit. We continued to do this even after she went off to college, and then I kept up the tradition after we moved to Colorado. I brought this fun event into my marriage and luckily for me, my wife enjoys it.

Congratulations to this year's winner. It was a backdoor entry that came in a box of gifts shipped to us. Just so everyone knows, when selecting the chosen card, we do not look at the names. No playing favorites in this contest. It's a serious business. So without further delay, the winner of the 2006 Christmas Card Contest is....

Joe and Jerri in "Festive Christmas Tree". We liked the vibrant look of this card and the fun feel it gave to the traditional Christmas tree. Well done.

Our Second Place Winner goes to one of my students with "Festive Snowman". Notice how enormous the snowman is in comparisson to the forest. No one is going to jack (frost) with that guy.

Finally, our Third Place Winner goes to Pat from Curry with "Snoopy and Woodstock's Christmas". This card featured various textures that would make it enjoyable to people of all ages. Add that with the enduring Snoopy and you have a winner. Well, a third place winner anyway.

Jealous? You should be. This is a tremendous event in the life of a Christmas card! Entering is easy though. Simply mail us a Christmas card by Christmas Eve and it will automatically be entered into that year's contest. Sorry, picture created cards are not eligible for First Place status, though they have been given their own distinct category. Cash bribes do not ensure victory, but they are always helpful.

I hope that everyone had a very merry Christmas and that you take time today to say a prayer of thanks for the real reason we celebrate!

Worth Repeating

This is a blog I wrote in December 2005 over on Windows Live Spaces. I felt it was worth sharing again with a new audience and I hope everyone enjoys it.

I just finished watching the film “The Polar Express” for the second time. Technically, it was the 2 ½ time I viewed the movie (once when it came out in 2004, once this past evening and the ½ came as I skipped through it in order that I could jot down a few notes).

For those who haven’t seen the “The Polar Express”, it is a truly outstanding movie. If you only watch one Christmas themed movie this season, watch “The Polar Express”. Along with the outstanding visual effects, this is hands down one of the greatest Christmas stories ever produced (as was the book).

What struck me the first time I saw this movie was the strong spiritual undertone throughout the entire film. It was not only amazing, but moving as well. A year later, I was still in awe over this aspect. What a life lesson this movie provides! Whether you celebrate the Christ of Christmas or are simply a “Happy Holiday’er” who enjoys Santa and decking the halls…this is a movie you need to see.

First allow me to say that I hope you finish reading this blog if you haven’t seen the movie yet. I will try not to ruin anything, but I feel what I have to say is more important than you knowing the end of a film.

Quickly, the movie is about a young boy who is struggling with his belief of Santa Claus. To believe or not to believe…that is indeed the question. He has collected worldly evidence that supports that Santa is not real (newspaper clipping of store Santa’s on strike, a picture of Santa with his fake beard being pulled down, a textbook stating that the North Pole is “devoid of life”, etc.). The world he lives in seems to support his idea of Santa not being real.

He lays down on Christmas Eve a shattered and broken child. A few moments later, the Polar Express arrives to pick him up. The Polar Express is a very magical train which is en route to the North Pole, more specifically, to Santa’s workshop. Along the way the boy witnesses many magical and spectacular things and meets numerous people. Yet he still struggles with his belief. He must see Santa in order to believe. Once they arrive to the very large North Pole, he sees Santa’s entire village complete with an express transportation system, millions of elves, a huge toy factory, and even flying reindeer.

Despite all that he sees around him, he can not believe because he has not seen Santa. He can’t even hear the bells ringing on the sleigh. The big man finally comes out of his home and the crowd goes into a frenzy. Our little boy can’t see Santa though. He can’t, that is, until he chooses to believe. It is in this moment that he can hear the bells. And it is in this moment that Santa comes to him.

Maybe you can identify with this child. You want to know God, you want to believe…but you can’t. You want proof. You won’t believe until you see God with your own two eyes. So often, people overlook the evidence of God around them.

“Well mister preachy guy…what about all the bad things? Where is God in all that?” Great question! Allow me to answer: We live in a fallen world full of sin (I will talk more about this later in the month). It’s a world where people choose to do evil instead of good. Just like we choose to believe or not believe. God gave us free will to choose Him. He truly wants your love…not forced worship.

Now, back to our regularly scheduled lesson; there is so much around us that we should see as evidence of God. I think people are looking for huge miracles, a divine message spoken aloud, or for a conquering king who will rid us of all things wicked. You know, that’s what happened the first time Jesus came to us. People were looking for some one to over throw the Roman government and set up an everlasting kingdom. They missed the baby who was born who would grow into a man who later died for the sins of the world. They missed it then, and people still miss it today. They miss how He touches the lives of millions, they miss the profound affect He has on the hurt, the lonely and the lost. They miss what things He is doing in the lives of others, often dismissing it as ‘untrue’ or ‘misled/informed’.

They miss it because they don’t see it. We live in a world that demands proof. To borrow a line from the movie “…sometimes seeing is believing. And sometimes the most real things in the world are the things we can’t see.” Looking in the Bible in the book of John (chapter 20, verse 29) Jesus says to Thomas (who doubted Jesus was raised from the dead) “Then Jesus told him, ‘Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet believed.’”

Let me ask you, would seeing Him really make you believe? Or, once you saw Him, would you ask “Well how do I know you are really Him?” Believing is not something anyone else can make you do. It comes from within you. You choose to believe.

Maybe you still have questions. There is nothing wrong with having questions…just don’t let your questions keep you from The Answer.

The first true Christmas gift came when God sent his one and only son to earth. Our sins (and yes, we all have sin…whether is be a white lie or storing illegal nuclear arms in you closet) separate us from God. The punishment for sin is death (Hell...thus the separation). In order to fix this problem, God gave us His son. He was born of a virgin, lived a sinless life, and then became sin for us. He took the sins of all who ever lived, are living and will live and died because of them. As I said above, we all deserve punishment and separation from God for the things we’ve done. But Christ took that punishment for us. Jesus defeated sin; he defeated death and provided a way to God.

But, you must choose to believe. And this Christmas, I truly hope you would.
